Many consumers have begun to consciously search for more naturally derived ingredients within their skincare products, and one item that's been gaining lots of attention happens to be the bright yellow fruit many of us have enjoyed at one point or another: bananas.

The produce carries a variety of benefits that nourish the skin from the inside out, and many beauty brands have taken notice.

Dermatologist and author "Dirty Looks: The Secrets to Beautiful Skin," Dr. Whitney Bowe, explained to "Good Morning America" that bananas are an excellent source of prebiotics that keep your gut microbiome healthy and balanced.

"If the bacteria in your gut are out of balance, it leads to a leaky gut, meaning the gut lining becomes more permeable and inflammatory molecules leak into the bloodstream," says Bowe. "This can exacerbate inflammation in the skin and can show up in the form of acne, rosacea, eczema or even premature aging -- all of which are linked by the common theme of chronic inflammation."

According to cosmetic chemist Erica Douglas, there are also a number of other additional skincare benefits that can be experienced through using bananas for your skin. She explains that bananas have vitamin E, which is beneficial in treating acne, reducing the look of wrinkles and clearing out dark spot or scars.

"Bananas also contain Vitamin A, C and D, which make them great moisturizers," says Douglas.

If you are interested in applying banana extract directly to your skin, Douglas recommends to prepare it by blending the actual fruit into a pulp and applying from there.

"You can also utilize the peel by applying it to the skin for 30 minutes, allowing it to dry and rinsing your face clean afterward."
