Then, when the star sang her hit song, "Hips Don't Lie," Shakira brought reggaeton singer Bad Bunny on stage and crowd surfed.

When Lopez hit the stage, she also sang a mashup of her top songs. The pop star, who donned a black skin-tight suit, opened her performance with "Jenny From The Block" then transitioned to "Get Right" and "Waiting For Tonight," which she sang while performing jaw-dropping moves on a pole like her character in "Hustlers."

Lopez brought Colombian reggaeton singer J. Balvin to the stage to help her sing "On The Floor."

Isabela Raygoza, Latin music editor and associate producer at SoundCloud, spoke about the impact for Latinx representation from the performance.

"Not only did they manage to pull off a riveting performance, but they also basically wrote history as the most Hispanic performance to date," she told "GMA." "They included Colombian global rhythm to the stage -- salsa and champeta -- and they also invited 24 dancers from Cali, Colombia from the world-class salsa company Swing Latino."

"And also that the surprise guests were J Balvin and Bad Bunny -- I thought that was pretty cool given that they themselves have been sort of also writing history," she added, noting the remarkable accomplishments on the charts of both artists.

One of Lopez's most surprising guests during the performance was her 11-year-old daughter, Emme, who joined her mom on stage to sing a mashup of two of Lopez's hit songs while Shakira played the drums nearby.

The mother-daughter duo belted out Lopez's hit song "Let's Get Loud" and "Born In The USA," while Lopez donned a floor-length feathered cape that had an American flag on the outside and a Puerto Rican flag on the inside.

Emme, who's no stranger to performing on stage with her mom in front of big crowds, immediately received praise for her performance on Twitter, where many showed their love for the sweet moment.

Lopez's fiance, Alex Rodriguez, who was in the crowd during the halftime show, posted a video on Twitter of him jamming out to the set.

"AMAZING!! She ABSOLUTELY CRUSHED IT!" he wrote. "I'm so proud of you, Jen!"

Raygoza commented on what the groundbreaking performance could mean for the future of Latin music.

"I think that this is also a great opportunity for Latin music to be booked [on] late-night TV shows across the United States and have more opportunities for advertisement, bigger brand sponsorships," she said.

"I do feel that because J.Lo and Shakira not only have been around for about two decades -- they were also a kind of a safe choice in terms of the booking because they gained a lot of their popularity in Miami first of all," she said. "They're very accessible to Americans. They have full English albums. They've been around as a margin for a long time in pop music, so in order for them to kind of hearken back to the roots, and do a lot of songs that were in Spanish, bring a lot of rhythms that are Latin, to invite guests who are at the forefront of music -- I think that is just pretty positive for the culture in itself."

After the performance, Shakira, who turned 43 years old Sunday, took to Twitter to thank her fans and share how happy she was with the show.

"The best birthday gift has been the support of all my fans and the most amazing and hardworking team an artist could wish for," she wrote. "We Latinos climbed Kilimanjaro and made history tonight and we couldn’t have done it without all of you!"

As a result of their halftime performance, Spotify showed a spike in streaming of music from both pop stars. Shakira's music soared about 230% on the music streaming platform for her songs like "She Wolf," "Whenever, Wherever" and "Empire," which saw the biggest jump. And Jennifer Lopez's music spiked by more than 335% for her songs such as "Waiting for Tonight," "Jenny from the Block" and "Get Right," according to Spotify.

The streaming platform also reported that Bad Bunny's and J. Balvin's music saw an increase of more than 24% and 16%, respectively, as well as Demi Lovato, whose music streaming increased to more than 31% following the game.

In the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl, both stars teased snippets of their performance with how they were preparing for the show.

Shakira shared Instagram clips of herself working out and getting in the zone.
