Justin and Hailey Bieber's relationship has evolved significantly over the years.
In a new interview for the "In Good Faith with Chelsea & Judah Smith" podcast, the "Peaches" singer and the model opened up about working through some major challenges in their three-year marriage.
After several years of friendship and a brief courtship in 2016, the couple rekindled their romance in 2018 and got married after just a few months together. However, the singer was struggling with his own mental health around that time -- and his wife was there for him.
"I was in it. I made a decision. I know for a fact that I've loved this person for a very long time and now would not be the time to give up on him. I just wouldn't do that to him," Hailey Bieber said. "Imagine abandoning somebody in the middle of the worst time of their life, potentially. I'm not that type of a person. So I was going to stick it out no matter what the outcome was going to be. It was really hard."
Justin Bieber, 27, canceled his "Purpose" tour in 2017 to focus on his mental health. In 2019, he penned a revealing statement in which he opened up about battling substance abuse and other issues.
"I had experienced so many things in my life," he said in this latest interview. "So many milestones and traveled the world and seen everywhere in the world. And I just got to a place where I was lonely, and I just didn't want to do it all alone. I realized there was some serious healing I needed to go through in order to get to a place where I could be in a healthy, serious relationship because I had a lot of trauma and scars. So I just committed to working on those things and getting healthy."
"Luckily, Hailey accepted me as I was," he added. "Even when we got married, there was still a lot of damage and hurt that I still needed to work through, but you've seen my heart through it all."
Hailey Bieber, 24, said that she worried at times that her husband wasn't going to be OK, but with the support of her family, they were able to keep their marriage strong. Now, the couple is enjoying their time together, which Justin Bieber said is possible because they're "showing up for each other every day."
"I had a lot of rejection issues, and I just had to fight through, but her just continuously showing up every day and being there for me, I kept seeing that over and over and over and just became more secure," he said.
