Beachwear doesn't have to be worn exclusively at the beach.
In fact, we think bikinis and swimsuits can be easily worn from day to night when layered with other transitional pieces in our closets.
For instance, a black bikini top can double as a bra or crop top and be worn beneath a crochet dress or an oversized blazer. And a one-piece swimsuit can be worn like any other bodysuit, with pants, skirts and more. Plus, we have men's options, too!
So, we've rounded up some ways you can transition your beachwear into a nighttime ensemble and gotten some tips from style expert Melissa Garcia, starting with a simple bikini and a versatile one-piece. Take a look at how we styled them below, plus shop additional layering pieces for even more inspiration.

"A one-piece bathing suit can double as a bodysuit, sexy yet understated and chic paired with a timeless tailored white linen suit," Garcia says. "Linen is the perfect fabric for summer and a suit is a perfect silhouette to elevate a casual swimsuit. Pair with a strappy heel and a statement earring and perfect for a night out."
"The key here for the guys is starting with a bathing suit that looks like shorts," Garcia says. "There are so many on the market now. They are tailored and structured like shorts with a zipper fly and English side-straps. Pair with a classic linen white button-down and a crisp white sneaker."
"A fun flirty tank-style bikini top is a go-to for your next pool party. It doubles as a crop top, especially in the prints and stand-out silhouettes offered these days. Plus, it works for swimming but looks just as polished as a beautiful pool party look ... Pair with a beautiful high-waisted maxi skirt to minimize the amount of skin revealed, a wedge and a great crochet bag."
"Matching sets have been trending not only for women but [for] men too and they are the perfect option for a pool party," Garcia adds. "This set gives you the flexibility of looking pulled together with an intentionally styled outfit but also the ability to hop right into the pool. [Pair] this matching set with rubber waterproof slides and finished with a straw fedora."
"Florals, crochet and denim are a must for summer concerts [and] festivals -- and bathing suits work great to achieve this [look]!" Garcia says. "It all starts with a floral bikini top paired with high-waisted denim shorts for adequate coverage. A lightweight crochet kaftan (or kaftan/pant matching set) paired with a wide brim fedora, sunnies, and (we can't forget) western low booties ... pull this summer concert look together."
"Florals and denim are the base for [this men's] look too. A solid bathing suit is a great base to work off of for this look. Add in a floral short sleeve button down, a lightweight denim jacket, converse and awesome sunnies to complete the look," Garcia says.
Pair a classic black bikini with an oversized linen shirt and sunglasses for the beach and then wear the bikini top with a light blazer and jeans or trousers for an on-trend evening look.
Shop our favorite swimsuits by coverage level: low, moderate, and fullWear a one-piece to the beach on its own (or with a cute sarong!) and pair with jeans, shorts or a skirt for dinnertime. In this case, we've styled an all-black one-piece and paired it with a tiered maxi skirt, a comfortable kitten-heel, and a beaded wooden bag for an easy summer ensemble.
Fill your summer wardrobe with easy-layering pieces that you can throw over swimwear and wear all night. Think neutral linen and cotton fabrics, oversized shirts and dresses, comfortable shorts and versatile accessories.
