Amazon now offers faster 1 and 3-hour same day delivery: Here's how it works

WATCH: Amazon CEO talks tariffs

Amazon customers can now get orders even faster with new 1-hour and 3-hour delivery options on thousands of products from household essentials to over-the-counter medications.

The retail giant announced Tuesday that "1-hour delivery is already available in hundreds of cities and towns across the U.S., and 3-hour delivery is live in over 2,000 cities and towns."

The user interface will show customers which items are eligible for 1-hour and 3-hour delivery in the Same-Day shopping page with new messaging next to products.

Amazon also added "in 1 hour" and "in 3 hours" search filters to make browsing the selection easier, along with a "dedicated storefront shopping page in areas where these options are available," the company said.

Hundreds of cities and towns nationwide have 1-hour delivery available at launch, including major regions like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., as well as smaller cities like Boise, Idaho, and American Fork, Utah.

Three-hour delivery is available to customers in over 2,000 cities and towns from large and midsize urban centers to their surrounding suburbs and beyond.

Both options will be available seven days a week, and Amazon said it plans to roll out the delivery options to "even more areas in the coming months."

Customers can visit Amazon's Same-Day Store online to see if their area offers the speedier delivery options.

"Our customers are busier than ever and are looking for new ways to save time while keeping their households running," Udit Madan, senior vice president of worldwide operations at Amazon, said in a statement. "We saw an opportunity to use our unique operational expertise and delivery network to help make customers' lives a little easier while unlocking even more value for Prime members."

Madan added, "We're excited to say that two decades after Prime first launched, we're still innovating to make delivery even faster, while maintaining the same everyday low prices and vast selection Amazon is known for."

Prime members will enjoy discounted delivery fees of $9.99 for 1-hour delivery and $4.99 for 3-hour delivery, according to Amazon. Standard Same-Day Delivery for Prime members remains free on qualifying orders, the company said.

For customers who don't have a Prime membership, 1-hour delivery costs $19.99 and 3-hour delivery costs $14.99.
