Spring is nearly here, and with it comes March's full moon -- a natural sign that winter is coming to an end. This year, however, the March full moon is especially significant.
Known as the worm moon, March's full moon will coincide with a total lunar eclipse, commonly called a blood moon, when the Moon takes on a striking reddish color.
The celestial event is expected to be visible across large parts of the United States.
Here's everything you need to know about the March 2026 blood moon lunar eclipse.
A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting a large shadow across the Moon's surface.
According to NASA, this alignment can only happen during a full moon.
During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon moves completely into Earth's shadow, causing it to appear red or orange in color.
NASA explains that during a total lunar eclipse, Earth blocks most of the Sun's light from reaching the Moon.
The remaining light that does reach the Moon is filtered through Earth's atmosphere, which scatters shorter wavelengths and allows red and orange tones to pass through.
The effect is often described as looking like all of Earth's sunrises and sunsets are projected onto the Moon -- creating the dramatic "blood moon" appearance.
The total lunar eclipse will occur in the early morning hours of March 3, 2026, according to NASA.
The blood moon will coincide with March's full worm moon.
According to NASA, a lunar eclipse can be safely observed without any special equipment. All you need is a clear view of the Moon.
For the best experience, experts recommend heading to a dark location away from bright city lights. While it's not necessary, using binoculars or a telescope can enhance the details and make the eclipse even more dramatic.
The Old Farmer's Almanac, which began publishing full moon names in the 1930s, explains that March's full moon is called the worm moon because earthworms begin to reappear as the ground thaws at the end of winter.
NASA adds that some Native American tribes used this name to describe the worm casts -- small piles of soil -- that appear as the frozen ground begins to soften.
Celebrity astrologer Kyle Thomas, who is known for his cosmic guidance among celebrities, businesses and online influencers, spoke with "Good Morning America," sharing this year's worm moon lunar eclipse occurs in Virgo, an Earth sign associated with productivity, organization and health.
"Virgo is a practical, grounded and efficient zodiac sign, which is what will be important for us to face," Thomas explained. "Streamlining our plans, schedules and routines will help us to make more progress and get where we wish to be much faster. Creating positive changes around diet, fitness and health will also do well now."
He added that this lunar eclipse is an especially powerful time to evaluate routines tied to diet, fitness and overall well-being.
Full moons have long been honored across cultures as moments of heightened energy, reflection and transformation. However, because this worm moon coincides with a lunar eclipse, Thomas said it's not the ideal time for traditional manifestation rituals.
"There is so much change already taking place on a collective level," he explained. "Instead, it is better to lie low, reflect, and pay attention to what the universe is trying to tell you about the newfound path you are being set upon."
Thomas recommends rest, meditation and self-care, noting that people may feel a mix of heightened emotions, adrenaline and exhaustion during the eclipse.
