Sofia Vergara was forced to miss the 77th Emmy Awards at the last minute on Sunday due to an unexpected medical issue.
The "Griselda" star and "Modern Family" actress revealed in an Instagram post that she experienced a "crazy" allergic reaction that impacted her eye.
"Didnt make it to the Emmys but made it to the ER 🤣😩sorry I had to cancel!" Vergara explained in a caption alongside two photos of herself and a video of her flushing out her right eye with water. "Craziest eye allergie right before getting in the car!🤣🤣"
Eye allergies, also called allergic conjunctivitis, are common, according to the American Academy of Opthalmology, and can be caused by a variety of factors, such as environmental triggers like dust or mold, food, eye drops, cosmetics, perfume, pet dander, insect bites or stings, pollen or smoke.
Symptoms of an eye allergy may include red, itchy or swollen eyes, burning or tearing of the eyes, light sensitivity, or if the eye allergy occurs alongside a nasal allergy, one may also experience an itchy or stuffy nose, sneezing, headache, an itchy or sore throat or coughing.
Eye allergies can be treated in different ways as well, including eye drops, antihistamines, steroids or allergy shots.
Vergara had been scheduled to be one of the nearly 40 presenters at the awards ceremony.
