Oscar nominations 2026: 'Sinners' shatters records with 16 nods

WATCH: Reactions to Oscar nominations

The 2026 Oscar nominations are here, and "Sinners" didn't just bite, it slayed.

Ryan Coogler's blockbuster film dominated the 98th Academy Awards nominations on Thursday with 16 nominations, breaking the Oscars all-time record.

The former record was held by "Titanic," "La La Land" and "All About Eve" with 14 nods apiece.

"Sinners" earned nominations for best picture, director, casting, cinematography, costume, film editing, makeup and hairstyling, music (original score), music (original song), production design, sound, visual effects and writing (original screenplay).

Stars Michael B. Jordan, Delroy Lindo, and Wunmi Mosaku also earned Oscar nominations for best actor in a leading role and best actor and actress in a supporting role, respectively.

In the film, Jordan plays twin brothers with a "troubled" past who return to their hometown in the Jim Crow South, where they are confronted by a supernatural evil, according to a synopsis for the film.

Another notable record was for costume designer Ruth E. Carter, whose fifth Oscar nomination for "Sinners" makes her the most nominated Black woman in Oscar history across any category, according to Variety.

Carter has won two Oscars in her career for achievement in costume design. Her first was in 2019 for "Black Panther," and her second was in 2023 for "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever."

Other Oscar nominees who broke records with their nods include Timothée Chalamet, who was nominated for best actor for his performance in "Marty Supreme," becoming the youngest actor to receive three Oscar nominations.

He previously earned nods for best actor in 2018 for "Call Me By Your Name" and in 2025 for "A Complete Unknown."

Steven Spielberg, who co-produced "Hamnet," also earned his 14th Oscar nomination for best picture, which is a record for an individual producer.

Additionally, Diane Warren is vying for the coveted Oscar for best original song for the ninth year in a row. Her nomination on Thursday for "Dear Me" from her film "Diane Warren: Relentless" brings her total nominations to 17. While she hasn't won the Oscar yet, she does have an honorary one, which she received in 2022.

Eleven individuals are first-time nominees, including Jordan, Rose Byrne, Jacob Elordi, Elle Fanning and Teyana Taylor.

The 98th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 15, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The awards will be televised live on ABC and streamed live on Hulu beginning at 7 p.m., ET.

The Walt Disney Co. is the parent company of ABC and Hulu.
