An 18-year-old basketball phenom nicknamed "Indian Wemby" is capturing the attention of top colleges and says he aspires to one day join the NBA.
"The ultimate dream is the NBA," Jagmeet Singh told ABC News' Danny New.
Singh grew up in northern India. He started playing basketball when he was 14 and was recruited to a local basketball academy while playing at a park.
Singh later competed for India's national youth basketball team before he received an offer to join a basketball development program in the U.S.
The high schooler is currently preparing for his senior year at Victory Rock Prep in Sarasota, Florida.
Now standing 7 feet, 4 inches tall, Singh's presence is hard to ignore. The 18-year-old has drawn comparisons to San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama, who also stands 7 feet, 4 inches tall, and was drafted from France into the NBA as the No. 1 pick in 2023, most recently playing with the Spurs in the 2026 NBA Finals.
Despite his advantage with dunking, Singh said transitioning to play basketball in the U.S. was tough, and he's taking it all one step at a time.
Singh said he thinks of his father Jaswinder, who died earlier this year following a heart attack, "every time" he's playing on the court and hopes to keep their shared hoop dreams going for a long time.
"He just wanted me to get his name out, get India's name out, make him proud," Singh said.
