Ashton Kutcher and Anthony Ramos are opening up about their new show "The Beauty," which Kutcher said draws inspiration from a recent health trend.
In an interview with "Good Morning America" on Tuesday, Kutcher said the upcoming show, produced by Ryan Murphy, was inspired by the rise of new weight loss drugs, specifically GLP-1 agonists.
"I sit down with him, and he starts telling me about this show that is all about a world where the most valuable thing is beauty," Kutcher said of Murphy. "And he was like, 'Look, there's this whole GLP-1 thing happening in the world now ... and people are, like, chasing after this drug.'"
"He's like, 'What if it made you like the most beautiful version of yourself? What would you give up to have that?'" he continued, quoting Murphy.
Kutcher added that he plays the villain in the show -- "the guy who created the drug" -- and that his character is being pursued by federal authorities because he is trying to sell his drug unregulated.
"It gets really dicey," he said.
Ramos, who plays Kutcher's co-conspirator in the sci-fi body horror series, told "GMA" that Kutcher delivered "one of my favorite performances I've ever seen from anyone on TV -- like, top five performances probably."
"I told Ashton, I'm like, 'Yo, bro, you're, like, my favorite character,'" he recalled telling Kutcher after watching the show.
Kutcher said that when the opportunity to join the series first presented itself, he was focused on non-acting ventures.
"I have this venture capital firm I run, and my kids are young, and so I'm coaching flag football, like, you know, my daughter's horseback riding, doing all the kid stuff, and I get a call from Ryan Murphy," he said. "And that makes you pick up the phone. You're like, 'But... it's Ryan Murphy.'"
"The Beauty," from "Glee" and "American Horror Story" producer Murphy, stars Kutcher, Ramos, Evan Peters, Bella Hadid, Rebecca Hall, Jeremy Pope and more.
A synopsis for the show reads, "In FX's 'The Beauty,' the world of high fashion turns dark when international supermodels begin dying in gruesome and mysterious ways."
"The Beauty" comes out on FX, Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ on Jan. 21.
